Jig Flies

Cannibal Flies

Flies for Predators Salt and Freshwater

Jig Flies
Flies for predators are often in the form of a fish that the chosen fish eats, that said there are of course the dayglo versions that resemble nothing but a cartoon radioactive fish. When I took interest in tying flies it was to make my own baitfish style flies, these flies were in my mind to offer all the advantages of flies in terms of movement they offer over plastic and wooden baits, now im not saying better but they are different and the do offer an alternative approach.

So coming from a lure fishing background my thoughts went to merging ultra light fishing and fly fishing. This line of thinking has lead to the Jig fly essentially a fly with a jig head, now i can hear the purist fly people now " that's not a fly" and "you better duck when casting that" etc etc. What many of these people fail to grasp is that its simply another approach and if you don't wish to use it, then simply don't use it. We could look at the weight of dumbbells used often in clousers, many of which can way just as much as a small jig head, or we could look at the products that have been so popular lately which are essentially a metallic head in various designs which are specifically designed for fly anglers, again often similar weights.

I use these jig flies for LRF style fishing on a non fly rod and in lighter weight jig heads on a fly rod, with such popularity these days in UL fishing its easy to find jig heads in the 0.3-2g range and these are usable on a suitable sized fly setup. They catch and they offer another tool to use in pursuit of catching fish so whats the harm ?
